Since 1872, Alpha Phi has built our membership around the commitment to 6 values:

Sisterhood- Alpha Phis cherish life-long friendships rooted in kindness, love and respect for one another. We believe in the concept of Watchcare - a tenet of our sisterhood which encourages support of one another through the good times and the bad, whether helping one another with academics or providing much needed support during a rough time.

Service - Alpha Phi supports those in need through service and philanthropy. We share a passion for helping one another and our surrounding communities. The Alpha Phi Foundation is one of the oldest Greek Foundations and works to raise awareness and funds in support of women's heart health.

Loyalty - Alpha Phis are members for a lifetime. We learn the value of loyalty and being true to each other and to our common ideals. Members continue to be devoted and connected sisters throughout college and beyond. They believe in stewardship and paying it forward such that those that come after them benefit from their legacy and the difference they made.

Scholarship - Alpha Phi values each member's passion for education, knowledge, and achievement. Our founders were ten of the first twenty women admitted to Syracuse University in 1872 and they had the courage to persevere to earn a college education despite societal expectations at the time.

Leadership - Alpha Phis lead by example and strive for continuous, innovative improvement. Since her inception, Alpha Phi's founders encouraged one another to think, invent and improve. This pioneering spirit can be seen throughout Alpha Phi history and today - in our founding, our development of new chapters and our willingness to be an innovator as exemplified by our many "firsts".

Sisterhood in Alpha Phi means challenging each other to seek the highest standards...

"I believe in it as a shrine of international sisterhood wherein I may find love and loyalty, sympathy and understanding, inspiration and opportunity..."

It’s a friendly face and a welcoming hug on a huge campus. Sisterhood in Alpha Phi means constant watch care, always given in love, a concept clearly outlined in our constitution. Sisterhood is a “Phi family” and long lines of bigs and littles to cheer on the cats with. It’s teamwork when raising money for our philanthropy at Red Dress Gala, and encouragement during long nights, studying for exams in the Alpha Phi house.

Sisterhood is the core value that has kept our tradition thriving for 144 years.

"We have banded ourselves together to improve our minds and hearts, and we seek to aid each other through a constant watchcare always given in love..."

At Kentucky Alpha Phi, we celebrate our steadfast sisterhood with our annual sisterhood camping retreat, frequent movie nights, ice skating during the winter, paint wars during the spring, trips to the pumpkin patch and pool parties on Kentucky’s bluegrass farms.

It’s never a dull moment when you’re a part of the Ivy League!

Bailey Cissell, Vice President of Membership of Recruitment

Dear Potential New Members,

Welcome to the University of Kentucky!

On behalf of my sisters in Alpha Phi, we are so happy that you have chosen to participate in Formal Recruitment 2018! It is with great excitement that we welcome a new class of members to our sisterhood. Greek life is a wonderful way to not only get involved, but to open up an array of opportunities for you now and in your future.

Alpha Phi offers a membership experience ranging from leadership development to academic achievement, from service on campus, to lifetime community involvement, and enduring friendships. Throughout my time in Alpha Phi, I have been gifted the opportunity to give back to an organization that has given me so much. In Alpha Phi, I'm able to raise money for the Alpha Phi Foundation, which raises awareness and contributes to research of the number one killer of women – heart disease.

To prospective members, I am so excited for you! You are about to embark on the most incredible journey that you will never forget. Recruitment is about finding a place that will enrich your time here at UK in the most remarkable ways and provide a lifetime of love and sisterhood. As members of Alpha Phi, we are so proud to say that we found that, (and much more), here!

Formal Recruitment gives us the opportunity to show you exactly why this organization means so much to us. As the Vice President of Membership Recruitment, I am so proud to continue building the legacy of Alpha Phi. I cannot wait for you to have a wonderful experience at our home and for you to meet the amazing women I am privileged to call my sisters!

All the best,

Vice President of Recruitment, Bailey Cissell

RECRUITMENT QUICK TIPS:

  1. Be yourself! We value authentic women who are confident in who they are and we look forward to seeing your true personality shine!

  2. Make new friends! Take this time to branch out and meet new people. College is a time for new beginnings!

  3. Talk with your Gamma Chi! Your Gamma Chi was carefully selected to invest in your recruitment experience. Be sure to ask her any questions you may have and don't hesitate to voice your concerns! She is there for you throughout the whole process.

  4. Feel your best! Kentucky during August is hot, humid and sometimes rainy. Be sure to dress for the weather and bring along an umbrella. Choose your shoes wisely-- you'll thank yourself for picking something sensible when you're running from house to house!

Letter from the President

On behalf of our chapter, welcome to Alpha Phi at the University of Kentucky! I am so happy to be able to give you a glimpse into our sorority and introduce you to the 300 women that make it so special.

My name is Emilie Moorman and I am currently serving as the Chapter President of Iota Nu. I am so honored to lead and serve this amazing group of women that all embody the very values I joined Alpha Phi for. We are accomplished leaders on our campus, high achieving students in our classrooms and dedicated servants to our community.

The sisterhood of Alpha Phi stretches from coast to coast through over 170 collegiate campuses with more than 200,000 members. Alpha Phi was founded in 1872, with the mission of forming a sisterhood of women supporting one another in lifelong achievement. Our innovative founders set the spirit for the modern day Alpha Phi… a sisterhood that values the past but looks forward to the progress offered by the future. The six values by which we live by are sisterhood, scholarship, service, leadership, loyalty and character development.

In the fall of 2017, I moved to campus as a freshman with no idea what the next four years would bring to me. I was the first women in my family to go through recruitment and extremely excited for the future; I hoped to develop lifetime friendships and longed to be a part of something much bigger than the small town I knew. I found this and much more when I received my bid in August of 2017. That day I ran home to 417 Columbia Avenue. My sisters are my chief support system and empower me to be a better woman.

Alpha Phi will be the most meaningful experience that I will look back on in college. Nothing compares to the sisterhood I have been blessed with here. It is here that I have found motivation to succeed, best friends that I will cherish forever and the comfort of being myself in the presence of people who love me for who I am. It is here that I have grown as a student, a sister, and an empowered woman. We pride ourselves on our Fraternities objectives of character growth, unity of feeling, sisterly affection and social communion; Iota Nu strives for the highest standards and pushes you to be the very best you can be. This chapter has made me the woman I am today and for that, I am forever thankful.

AOE, together we rise.

Loyally,

Emilie Moorman

Alpha Phi – Iota Nu Chapter President
